In the west, the US-20, also known as the Grant Memorial Highway, connects to Freeport, Galena and Dubuque, Iowa. The highway itself connects Rockford with Rockton, Rockland County, Illinois, and the city of Chicago.
The Rockford Area has two other sites that have been designated 150 Great Places by the American Institute of Architects. The most famous is the Civic Center, a civic and entertainment center that is listed among the "150 great places in Illinois" for its architectural excellence. Also noteworthy is that South Beloit, Illinois, and Belois, Wisconsin, are both located within a contiguous urban area that stretches about 30 miles along the Rock River from Chicago - Rockman International Airport in the north to Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport. There are a large number of restaurants, bars, shops, hotels and restaurants that are considered integral to this Rockford subway area.
After several renovations, the Coronado Performing Arts Center is now an iconic performing arts venue in Rockford. It opened in 1927 and is one of the oldest theaters in the state of Illinois and the second oldest in Illinois.
